Growing up in a Polish family, every day was filled with fun, good food and of course lots of eating! All of this was amplified at the holidays, when no punches were pulled, and it seemed like everything we ate from Thanksgiving right through Christmas was made from scratch.
At the top of that list was home made Polish sausage. Through all of my travels, and everywhere I have lived in the world, I've yet to taste Polish sausage like my Grandma Lewandowski used to make. The smell and taste literally defines my memories of the holidays during my childhood.
The little old Italian ladies might get all of the hoopla for their meatballs and sauce, but I'd put my Grandma's fresh Polish sausage up against any of them!
My only regret is that I don't have the pierogi recipe from my Grandma Leonard. Those were a Christmas Eve treat like no other!
I miss those times as both of my Grandmothers are gone, but through the years, they have instilled in me a pride for my heritage. I hope one day to visit Poland and learn more about my family and the country we came from.
